Hospitalidade e religiosidade popular : sentimento de pertença à comunidade do Santuário N. Sra. de Caravaggio no município de Farroupilha-RS

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between hospitality and popular religiosity originated from the sense of belonging to the community of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Caravaggio, in the municipality of Farroupilha-RS. Its specific objectives are: to generate a discussion on the concept of church as a place of hospitality, a sacred space of popular religiosity and cultural identity; to present the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Caravaggio in its historical aspects, geographical location and dynamics in relation to the seven chapels and to describe the process of constitution, as well as the current dynamics in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Caravaggio, in the Municipality of Farroupilha-RS; to analyse the narratives of those who participate in the life of the Sanctuary and chapels about the hospitality offered; to cross- reference the reports of people involved with the Sanctuary and the chapels, considering the references of hospitality and popular religiosity. The community is made up of the main center and several chapels that have helped to organize and provide hospitality in view of their strong sense of belonging that keeps them connected to the Sanctuary. The research primarily involves the following theoretical lines of investigation: hospitality and popular religiosity. In methodological terms and with a view to developing it, the following aspects were covered: a bibliographic review, organization of theoretical support, and field research using the oral history method and the discursive textual analysis method for data analysis. From the community's memories, it was possible to identify: the vision regarding the historical heritage existing in the location that constitutes the Sanctuary and the seven chapels studied; the factors that influence the sense of belonging to the community and the service in the Sanctuary; the spirit of mutual hospitality among the residents of these communities and to the pilgrims, as well as the outcome of these actions in the community. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Caravaggio and the seven chapels linked to it represent an emblematic universe for discussing the theme, and the research helps understand the hospitality shown by a community born from an immigration process, Catholic, and with strong ties to the Italian culture.
