Violência de gênero no ambiente da academia

Abstract

This paper aims to bring forth the debate on gender violence in the gym. This is a theme that is so current and yet rarely commented on in an environment that, because of its particularities, balances both the legitimate concern to foster the health of the human being and at the same time to force an unattainable body image where the human being is reduced to a pattern of impossible beauty standards and the products associated with that lifestyle. During the history of the West, women have been treated ranging from second-class citizens to bargaining chips for family arrangements, and perhaps for this reason women are judged more harshly in environment they may attend. Heleieth Saffioti, Pierre Bourdieu and other authors were used for the theoretical support of this research. Data collection was performed via online form. Participants in the survey stated that they had knowledge about what gender violence was(96%), 80% said they had never suffered such violence and 63% said they had suffered common attitudes of gender violence with the main occurence beings intimidating glares (89%) and embarrassing comments (58%). The participants also answered that they witnessed episodes of gender violence with third parties and showed that 57% had already witnessed these situations, with embarrassing comments (71%) and intimidating glares (65%) being the most prevalent situations (sic).
