Os mecanismos de desgaste predominantes foram a abrasão e adesão. dc.description.abstractThe aim of this work is to study the influence of the cutting preparation by the polishing process with abrasive brushes, applied to end milling. The current requirement of the industry focused on machining has encouraged the development of new techniques that allow a better performance of the cutting tools. Meeting these demands, the cutting treatment acts directly on the interaction between the part and the tool, providing gains on the useful life and surface quality of the finished part. Guided by these premises, machining tests were performed with end mills prepared by abrasive brushes with different types of orientation of their filaments, comparing the results to a mill without preparation. The preparation of the cutting edge occurred in a standardized way and used brushes with abrasive bristles arranged radially and brushes composed of bristles with random orientation (abrasive sponge). The performance related to the surface quality of the tools was evaluated through the measurements of roughness and texture of the machined surface, generated at the beginning and at the end of the useful life of each tool. The evaluated textures were similar to each other, both for the beginning and the end of the tests, with no significant differences. The roughness evaluated in the specimens showed similar results at the beginning of the process for all conditions tested, in the end, the lowest values of roughness were attributed to the tools that received the edge treatment. Regarding tool life, wear behavior curves showed different results. Preparation using brushes with radial bristles resulted in an 8% increase in tool life compared to a tool without preparation. The preparation with the use of abrasive sponge, on the other hand, obtained a service life 8% lower in comparison with a mill without preparation of the tip. The predominant wear mechanisms were abrasion and adhesion. [resumo fornecido pelo autor]pt_BR
