As amarras do tempo em O continente : entre o movimento, a duração e a espera

Abstract

This paper examines the narrative of time in O Continente, the first novel of Erico Verissimo's trilogy O tempo e o vento. The study explores different aspects and nuances of time with the purpose of understanding its relevance and meaning in the context of such literary work. The paper supports the claim that the novel, plentiful of possible readings, also deals with the issue of time due to the structure of the text, framed by the siege of the Sobrado; to its development, sometimes cyclic sometimes linear; to duration, experienced by the passing of hours, days and months; and to the theme of time itself, verified through characters' thoughts and their experience of waiting. Contextualized in that specific space, time acquires regional features as temporal experience changes.
