A presente dissertação investiga a narrativa do tempo em O Continente, romance de Erico
Verissimo que abre a trilogia O tempo e o vento. Explora os seus vários aspectos e nuances,
buscando decifrar sua relevância e a sua significação. Dessa forma, o trabalho defende a hipótese
de que o romance, rico em leituras, trata também da questão do tempo, a partir da organização do
texto, em que o cerco ao Sobrado envolve a narrativa; do movimento, ora cíclico ora linear; à
experiência da duração, explorando a vivência da passagem de horas, dias e meses; e da própria
tematização do tempo, a partir de reflexões, da vivência da espera pelas personagens. Inserido em
um espaço específico, o tempo adquire aspectos regionais, à medida que a vivência temporal se
modifica.
Abstract
This paper examines the narrative of time in O Continente, the first novel of Erico
Verissimo's trilogy O tempo e o vento. The study explores different aspects and nuances of
time with the purpose of understanding its relevance and meaning in the context of such
literary work. The paper supports the claim that the novel, plentiful of possible readings, also
deals with the issue of time due to the structure of the text, framed by the siege of the
Sobrado; to its development, sometimes cyclic sometimes linear; to duration, experienced by
the passing of hours, days and months; and to the theme of time itself, verified through
characters' thoughts and their experience of waiting. Contextualized in that specific space,
time acquires regional features as temporal experience changes.
