This dissertation proposes a critical analysis regarding the headlines and leads in journalistic speeches published in English and their respective translation or version for the Portuguese language, from the BBC News, Washington Post, The New York Times and CNN sites regarding the COVID-19 in the year 2020. The epistemological bases used were Critical Discourse Analysis (ACD), under the eyes of Norman Fairclough (1989, 1992, 2001, 2005, 2016) and the Escopo Theory, by Hanns Veermer, Katherina Reiss (2014) and Christiane Nord (2016). The methodology used was the creation of a corpus containing 15 journalistic speeches. From them, a relationship was made between the theoretical and practical aspects of the discourse. Using the ACD, the participants, processes and circumstances of the titles and calls of each speech in English and Portuguese were analysed in order to verify whether the three items analysed were used in the same way in both languages. As for the translation aspects, the Scope Theory was analysed if the translated speeches were modified or translated in a natural and / or integral way, considering that the effect of meaning was caused in the translations from the lexical choices used by the translators. As a result, it was noticed that the titles and calls of the journalistic speeches present in the open pages in English and Brazilian Portuguese of the websites BBC News, The New York Times and CNN News manage to maintain partially the fidelity of the texts. We observe that translators are free to create new speeches as long as they keep the data contained in the source text. In the end, we concluded that the speeches are modified by ideological or cultural issues in relation to the reading public. [resumo fornecido pelo autor]en
