In the pursuit of improvements in the mechanical properties of aluminum-silicon alloys, niobium emerges as an alternative to titanium as a grain refining agent, due to the absence of silicon poisoning of its nucleating particles. A possible solution to reduce the cost of Al-Nb-B master alloys consists of replacing metallic Nb with niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5). However, the feasibility of production using Nb2O5 as the sole source of niobium remains poorly explored in the literature. The present work aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using Nb2O5 as a raw material for the production of an Al-Nb-B master alloy intended for the grain refinement of an Al-7Si alloy, in comparison with a commercial Al-3.7Nb-0.4B master alloy. The production of the experimental master alloy from Nb2O5 was conducted in an electric furnace at 1000 °C for 1 h, with manual stirring every 5 min, using Al-4B as a boron source, and solidification occurred in a sand mold. The master alloys were added to the Al-7Si alloy at contents of 0.1 wt. % and 0.3 wt. % of Nb, and a sample without addition was produced as a control condition, totaling five conditions. The characterization of the chemical composition and microstructure of the master alloys and Al-7Si alloys, with and without refiner, was conducted by ICP-MS, OES, OM, SEM-FEG, and EDS. The refining effect of the master alloys was evaluated by quantification of the microstructural spacing of the Al-7Si alloys using the linear intercept method and by Vickers microhardness. The experimental master alloy produced exhibited incorporation yields of 48.7 % for Nb and 48.2 % for B, corresponding to 1.46 wt. % Nb and 0.48 wt. % B in the master alloy. Microstructural characterization confirmed the formation of Al3Nb and NbB2 in both master alloys. The commercial master alloy presented well-dispersed particles, while the experimental master alloy presented agglomerated particles and Fe contamination. The microstructural spacing of the Al-7Si alloy decreased by 23 % in the sample with 0.3 wt. % Nb from the commercial master alloy and by 19 % in the sample with 0.1 wt. % Nb from the experimental master alloy, values equivalent within the scatter of the measurements. The sample with 0.3 wt. % Nb from the experimental master alloy Al-1.5Nb-0.5B showed no refining effect. Microhardness showed the greatest increase in the Al-7Si sample with 0.3 wt. % Nb from the commercial master alloy, from 63.5 HV (alloy without Nb) to 80.0 HV, representing an increase of 26 %. The results indicated that the production of Al-Nb-B master alloys from Nb2O3 is feasible on a laboratory scale, with incorporation yields exceeding those reported in the literature. The performance of the experimental master alloy was limited by the production and particle dispersion procedure, not by the use of Nb2O3 as the Nb source. Therefore, optimizing the distribution of nucleating particles, by improving the yield of the reaction converting Nb2O3 to NbB2 and by continuous stirring of the molten aluminum, remains a challenge for future work.
