O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar aspectos da linguagem oral, como aqueles
representados na fala dos Okies, personagens de John Steinbeck, no romance The grapes of
wrath (no original, em inglês), em contraste com duas traduções da obra em Língua
Portuguesa, feitas por Herbert Caro e Ernesto Vinhaes (As vinhas da ira, 1982 e 2008). Além
do procedimento descrito, será feita também uma análise quantitativa e qualitativa,
focalizando especialmente as criações lexicais (neologismos) do autor e as estratégias
tradutórias empregadas para representar a linguagem oral da época e o local retratado no
enredo, assim como a identificação e classificação dos procedimentos tradutórios.
Abstract
This dissertation examines aspects of oral language such as those represented in the speech of
the Okies, characters created by John Steinbeck on his masterpiece The grapes of wrath, in
contrast with two translations in Portuguese, both translated by Herbert Caro and Ernesto
Vinhaes (As vinhas da ira, 1982 and 2008). Besides that, an analysis will be focusing
especially on lexical creations by the author and on translation strategies chosen to represent
the oral language from that time and place portrayed in the plot, as well as on identifying and
classifying the translation procedures.
