Description
Abstract
This dissertation investigates the treatment of linguistic variation in the textbook collection Português: Linguagens (Cereja e Vianna, 2022), designed for the final years of Elementary School (6th through 9th grade), drawing on Educational Sociolinguistics and a theory called Teoria dos Contínuos by Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo (2004; 2025). The study examines how linguistic variation is approached in the didactic material with the aim of developing pedagogical suggestions that enable teachers to supplement their classes with contributions from Educational Sociolinguistics. The research, qualitative and bibliographic in nature, takes as its corpus specific chapters from the four volumes of the collection dedicated to the theme of linguistic variation, verifying their alignment with the competencies and skills set forth in the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (2018). The analysis reveals a structurally ambiguous pattern running through all four volumes, although the collection incorporates consistent Sociolinguistic theoretical references and approaches, at certain points, the principles of Culturally Sensitive Pedagogy, this openness does not translate into articulated didactic sequences. Both the collection and the teacher's manual itself fail to fully break with normative logic, maintaining the standard norm as the implicit horizon of pedagogical practice. Bortoni-Ricardo's Teoria dos Contínuos emerges in this context not merely as an analytical lens but as a concrete pedagogical methodology, whose absence from the material represents a significant gap in the development of students' communicative competence.
